Unit Name: Kalzas Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: Early Mississippian (359.2 - 345.3 ma)
Age Justification: Fossiliferous, contains brachiopods and corals (R.B. Campbell, 1967).
Province/Territory: Northwest Territories

Originator: R.B. Campbell, 1967.

Type Locality:
South slopes of Crystal Peak (ca. 62 deg 52'N, 134 deg 30"W).

Distribution:
The formation is approximately 330 m (1,000 ft) and it is unlikely that it is less than 228 m (750 ft) or more than 381 m (1,250 ft). It occurs discontinuously with a small outcrop in the valley north of the Kalzas Range, from here it extends southeastward through the Wilkinson Rage. It also occur east, south and west of the west end of Earn Lake.

Lithology:
Consists almost entirely of grey and buff weathering dark grey to black fetid, finely crystalline to cryptocrystalline, bioclastic limestone. Some of the limestone is silty, some argillaceous and silty.

Relationship:
It conformably overlies the Crystal Peak Fm and is conformably overlain by thin-bedded chert, argillite, quartzite and limestone of the unnamed upper member of the Earn Group. This formation corresponds to the limestones of map unit 10 of H.S. Bostock (1947). It is equivalent to map units 8a and 8b of R.B. Campbell (1954) and map unit 6 of Roddick and L.H. Green (1961b).
