Unit Name: Landry Formation
Unit Type: Lithostratigraphic
Rank: Formation
Status: Formal
Usage: Currently in use
Age Interval: Devonian (416 - 359.2 ma)
Age Justification: Brachiopods.
Province/Territory: Northwest Territories

Originator: Douglas and Norris, 1961.

Type Locality:
No type designated.

Distribution:
The Landry Formation is 122-152 m (400-500 ft) thick on the Whittaker Range, 91 m (300 ft) on the Delorme Range, 178 m (585 ft) on the northeast flank of the Rouge Range, only 23 m (75 ft) in the Tigonankweine Syncline and 152 to 488 m (500-1,600 ft) in the southwestern Wrigley map-area and adjacent Sekwi Mountain and Nahanni map areas. It is found in the Franklin and Mackenzie mountains.

Lithology:
Resistant, cliff-forming, grey weathering, thick to massive bedded, cryptograined limestones. Locally it is mottled with medium to dark grey dolomite. In the Whittaker Range, it is comprised of medium-grey to black, crypto- to medium-grained, in part pelletoidal and fossiliferous limestone. In the Wrigley area, alternating light grey and dark grey weathering imparts a distinctive banding to the formation. Locally, the formation is reefal.

Relationship:
It conformably overlies the Arnica Formation in the Wrigley Lake, Rouge Range and Tsezotene Rage (Tigonankweine Syncline), the Manetoe Formation in the Thundercloud Range, the Natla in the southwestern Wrigley Lake map-area, the Funeral in the Grizzly Bear Lake and Broken Skull Syncline area (Gabrielse et al., 1973). The boundary with the Natla Formation is placed at the highest occurrence of sooty-recessive limestone. In the northeasternmost Nahanni area, the Landry grades southeastwards into strata typical of the Funeral Formation. The formation is overlain by the Headless or Hume formations. It may be equivalent to part of the Chinchaga Formation. It may interbed with the Manetoe Formation (Morrow, 1977). Eastward it is equivalent in part to the Bear Rock Formation. Aitken et al. (1982) equates the Landry with the Pellet limestone member of the Gossage Formation.
